Our Current Political Situation31 Jan 2008 09:04 am

I have no idea who this adams guy is, and this is not an endorsement of him, but if McCain wins the nomination, this is what we’ve got - two people exactly alike - both possibly hideous space reptiles. It makes me want to vomit in terror.

And the winner is…31 Jan 2008 08:30 am

HRH!!!  Congrats!  Random.org spit out #97, and that’s you, baby.  Email me your address, and we’ll go from there.

Thanks for all the comments, and I’m sorry we don’t have over a hundred dresses to give everybody.  I do have some dust bunnies available though….

Hooray! Another Giveaway!30 Jan 2008 05:46 am

And this one totally rocks.

It’s another dress giveaway, this one from Mikarose, a company that sells modest dresses.  But this time, we’re going to let YOU do the shoppng!  That’s right–Mikarose is offering a $60.00 gift certificate to one lucky winner, so you get to choose which dress you want.  Just go the their website, www.mikarose.com, do a little perusin’, and then come back here and comment on which dress you’d like to win.  We will keep comments open for about 24 hours, which means I’ll close them Thursday, Jan 31st at around 11:00am.  The Wiz says there is actually a program that will choose a winner randomly, so I don’t have to go the ‘comment out of the hat’ routine (which I REALLY did last time–I used my son’s dress up hard hat and everything.)

The dresses look fantastic, and, for my money, are reasonably priced. So go get shopping and commenting, ladies! (Well, I guess men are welcome, too.  You’d score some BIG points with the wives with this one, guys!)

So Soon OR Oh, Mortality29 Jan 2008 04:23 pm

Please forgive the haphazard diary-like quality of this post. I just need to vent, I suppose.
President Hinckley fully lived his 97 years. I mourn for his children and for members of the church who feel sad. But I do not mourn his life. It was long and life-filled. It’s so hard to wrap your brain around lives that don’t get to be long and full. (more…)

Burn Me, Baby! Why I Want to be Cremated29 Jan 2008 09:36 am

I think our church has an unspoken taboo against cremation, but since there is no “official” stance, I want my family to know that after I die, I definitely want to be cremated. Here’s why: (more…)

Toys, toys, toys29 Jan 2008 07:01 am

Toys, toys, toys, I’m so SICK of toys.  I get toys all day through, first from him, then from you, is that all you blighters can do?  (OK, it’s from My Fair Lady…sort of)

My “play room” is officially the armpit of hell. (more…)

More On Opting out28 Jan 2008 12:46 pm

Some of you might have followed the flame war going on at FMH about Artemis’ thoughts on nursery.  (Warning: Things got really ugly on that thread, so view at your own risk.)  Basically, Artemis expressed her reservations about putting her daughter Marigold into nursery, saying that for a variety of reasons, she was going to “opt out”. The Passing of Our Sweet Prophet27 Jan 2008 05:25 pm

I just got the call from my sobbing mother. President Hinckley died at 7 pm tonight at the age of 97.  Here’s a link to the Deseret News article with more details. All I can feel is great joy and relief that Gordon B. Hinckley is finally reunited with his sweet wife. There is nothing yet about his death on lds.org but I thought I would break the news here. I am thinking it may be appropriate to share here either a favorite memory of the prophet, something he said that inspired you, or what you think his legacy in the church will be. (more…)

Guest post: Grieving for Gus26 Jan 2008 11:37 am

This is a guest post by melmck, a mom who lost her son Gus to SIDS not long ago.  We are humbled that she would choose our forum to tell her story, and we hope that her story will help her through the grieving process, as well as give support to other parents who have suffered the loss of a child.  You can read more from melmck at http://www.gracielueandno2.blogspot.com/.

I suffered with Post-Partum Depression when I had my first daughter, Gracie. I wanted to wait at least a year before we had any more but when she was 10 months old, my husband, Robby, and I felt that it was time for another child. I became pregnant right away and had a very difficult pregnancy: admittance into the hospital more than once, contractions every day and weekly doctors appointments. (more…)

So I’m Curious….25 Jan 2008 02:48 pm

More obvious life tips24 Jan 2008 05:43 pm

Never go to the library and check out 10 books for your child right before you give birth to another child.  You might forget that you ever went to the library, and that you have any books due at all until you get the nasty notices from them.  And you might have to pay almost $30 in library fees.

Never put a DVD you think is entitled “Blue Planet” in it’s Netflix sleeve and get it ready to mail before 8am.  After the mailman comes (and your contacts are in), you might notice that the “Blue Planet” DVD is still around, but you are missing a disc from your “Planet Earth” series. (more…)

Just a Thought24 Jan 2008 06:44 am

You know, it might not be the best idea to watch two hours about serial killers right before you go to bed.

I’m just sayin……

Do you know the Tunnel Woman….23 Jan 2008 05:44 pm

She doesn’t live with the Muffin Man on Drury Lane, but rather in her own apartment in Silver Spring, Maryland.  We’re talking about her and some other stuff over at Segullah. Come share your stories.

I have found myself hyperventilating the last few weeks as I have recommenced the trials of dropping off and picking up carpool for school.   It amazes me the stupidity or is it just inconsideration of some of the other drivers.  If there is room in front of you, pull forward!!!!!   It is really that simple.  (more…)

Random Crap22 Jan 2008 08:55 am

I hate science fair projects.  Fortunately, my husband is good at helping.  We are currently studying something about popcorn.  I’m not sure what.  I try to avoid “science.” (more…)

So now I’m all confused22 Jan 2008 04:32 am

As mentioned previously, we are addicted to BBC’s series “Planet Earth”.  We got it for Christmas, and we have spent some quality family time devouring it.  J loves it so much, we can use it as a bribe for good behavior, which is much better than candy.

The last disc of the series involves, as one might expect, a discussion about conservation and preservation of Planet Earth, and a discussion of what can be done to protect the many endangered species that were featured in the film.  The discussion ranged from buzz words like “sustainable development” and population control to the pros and cons of trophy hunting.

I found it most confounding. (more…)

Civil Rights according to a 5 year old21 Jan 2008 10:22 am

This is what my son told me about why he doesn’t have to go to school today:

“See, Mom, there was this man called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and he wanted to run a race, but somebody told him that a black person and a white person weren’t allowed to race together, that they had to be in a different race, but he said no, everybody should be able to be allowed to be together, all in the same race.”  And he showed me the picture he drew that had a white child running on a track holding hands with a black child.  Ok, they both looked more like aliens than children, but the colors were consistent. A Friendly Reminder from the Prophet19 Jan 2008 12:46 pm

Ladies, I’m happy to report on our stake conference last week where we were able to hear from President Hinckley. As usual, his talk was direct and refreshing. His topic was the marital relationship. Some of you may have already heard him read the letter that he received from a woman. She asked him if there was anything more to hope from life than being “barefoot and pregnant” and expressed concern for her daughters being raised in the church turning out as miserable as she was. Then the prophet put the smack down. (more…)

I think I’m having Blogger’s Block19 Jan 2008 12:37 am

So, Wiz and I were chatting.  We kinda do that a lot, so much so that her DH wants us to get one of those new fangled IP phone thingies so he can cut down on the phone bill a little.  (I think the real reason is because Wiz’s DH is a gadget guy, and plus, how cool would it be to have a gadget you could name something cool like, “The Bat Phone”, or, um, something that is actually cooler than what I just wrote.)

Anyway, Wiz and I were talking about my latest post, which, if you recall, is a fascinating discussion of my son’s underwear.  Basically, she told me that she thinks that I should be snarked for a post as stupid as that, and that I would deserve a comment like, “Hey, I have some dog vomit here–should I clean it up, or does anybody know of some recycling facility that could make it into some sort of blown glass artifact?”
