Got on a Wii Fit Yesterday…13 Mar 2009 10:33 am

…and it told me I was unbalanced.  Well, yeah.  I could have told you that.

A Traffic Stopping Post12 Mar 2009 11:05 am

Recently my husband went through what he thought was a yellow light.  The photo cop in the sky disagreed and swore it was red.  (And yes, photo cops have a brain, and can think - they’re taking over the world, you know.  Sky Net. You heard it here first.)

So I get this eerie  picture of him in the mail, proving the offense, and all kinds of instructions on what to do next, so as to avoid jailtime with all the other evil lawbreakers.  We were fairly motivated to avoid that, especially me, seeing as how all my jailhouse knowledge comes straight from TV and the movies, and it doesn’t look too pleasant - knowing, of course, that all media portrayals are to be trusted implicitly.

The result was traffic school, which meant we didn’t have to pay for the $280 ticket, no…..we just had to pay the $200 traffic school fee!  The city is nothing if not generous. It was, after all, his first offense. (more…)

Ramen Noodles…it’s what’s for dinner.11 Mar 2009 02:31 pm

Dinner meals are a nightly struggle and they wear me out.  This however was a huge success last night, so I thought I would share. The only changes I made were adding 3 packages of noodles (only 2 flavor packets), 1 can of chicken, and tortilla chips instead of Fritos.  For a larger family (we have 5) I would double it to fit in a 9×13.

That reminds me…I need to go start the dinner battle all over again…sigh.

A Night at the Museum Or Going once, going twice…Hey you, get outta the way, that’s mine!09 Mar 2009 10:20 pm

Fortunately, my night at the museum didn’t involve ancient fossils coming to life or historical figures mounting horses.  However, it did turn parents into unrecognizable creatures compared to their normal, daylight images. (more…)

Travails of Travel08 Mar 2009 09:39 pm

You know that threshold when you just can’t take any more and you fantasize about getting away for awhile, all by yourself?  No kids, no husband, no laundry, no dirty toilets, no grocery lists and endless chauffeuring?  We’ve all been there at some point, and after days like Tracy M. had, understandably so.  But despite the fantasy, how long can you really go without your kids? (more…)

Ask Me How Do I Feel, Ask Me Now That I’m Stabbing and Poking.08 Mar 2009 12:26 pm

Everybody keeps asking me how I feel.  Do I feel different now that I’m on insulin and the sugars have normalized?  What’s it like? And so I’ve thought a lot about it, and I now have an answer for you. (Well, the you only applies if you were one of the people asking, I guess.)

I feel like I’m on an antidepressant.  So yes, I feel good. (more…)

Ballet Dancer of Death?06 Mar 2009 05:00 pm

I’m supposed to be helping out at Em’s ballet recital tonight.  Help the kids get into their costumes, set up some chairs, and that’s…..basically it.  Shouldn’t be a problem, right?  We got through the dress rehearsal just fine, and everything, it’s just…..

Em has a fever.  A low one, (hasn’t gone above 100) but a fever just the same.  (more…)

Guest Post: Having more kids could kill me, and I’m kinda bummed about that particular problem05 Mar 2009 08:40 pm

This is a guest post from Kris, who blogs at  Too Young for This.  I’m sorry no LOST recap today.  Life is just a wee bit nuts, and I didn’t even have the time to watch LOST, so don’t you dare send me vibes or hints about what happened–I want to catch up and be amazed without spoilers.  FYI, I will also be taking a short break from blogging for a week or so to party with my in-laws. In the meantime, here is another guest post from a mom who is dealing with some hard stuff

My son is 13 months old.  At the beginning of the year DH and I were getting ready to have another wee beastie, but my first pregnancy was the stuff nightmares are made of so we decided to seek out professional help first.  After bazillions of tests from cardiologists, CT scans for my kidneys, seeing freakishly High High HIGH RISK Pregnancy Specialists, I’ve been told that if I get pregnant again I have a 56% chance of dying.

Which, is kind of a major bummer. (more…)

Oh, the Reunion Show. Why Not?05 Mar 2009 02:25 pm

Leah could not stop touching her hair.  Oh no she could not.  PLEASE make her stop, or I’m going to reach through the screen and give her a buzz.  Clearly, it’s a nervous habit, and she was obviously very nervous.

Melissa’s hair was better.  But every time they showed a clip with her in it, I remembered the horror of her bangs, and I smiled.  I’m very strange that way.  (It made me happy that she did something about it.) (more…)

Guest Post: Surviving the ICU04 Mar 2009 08:08 am

This is a guest post from Emily.

My 4 month old is in the pediatric ICU at Primary Children’s hospital.  We’ve been here a few days already, but it looks like she’s going to be here for weeks.  The nurses keep telling me that I need to take care of myself but I don’t even know how to do that.  How do I leave her side?

A Story About Carseats, Insurance and Shiny Suits03 Mar 2009 11:08 am

Backstory: A teenager on her cell phone made a left turn into the broad side or our Suburban. Aside from the colossal amount of tears said teenager shed, no one was hurt. Her father requested we keep the insurance company out of it, but we opted to go the conventional route. Sorry, Dad Guy. I really am- I know how premiums suck, and I wish we could help you- but with no job in 14 months, we can’t be stuck with any more bills.

Yesterday morning, I dropped the Suburban off at the State Farm approved collision center. Insurance is providing a rental car while ours is down, and they assured me it would be a car big enough for three carseats- and that the whole process would take about 30 minutes. I had a preschool recital in 90 minutes. That’s enough of a cushion, right? Right… (more…)

And it came to pass

Who would you invite to dinner?01 Mar 2009 05:13 pm

Every Sunday, my newspaper features a column entitled “High Profile” that spotlights an individual who has contributed significantly to the local community.  At the conclusion of each article, the journalist asks the same series of questions:  “What was the last book you read?”  “Where would you like to go that you’ve never been?”  And finally, the proverbial, “If you could have dinner with anyone, with whom would it be?” (more…)
