Not expecting that ending. Not at all.
I don’t even know what to say, except it’s hard to figure out who the good guys are. Ben is never a good guy, and he’s creepy. But so is Widmore, so we’re stuck.
I honestly don’t know who to believe–did Widmore stage the plane, or did Ben? I still think it’s Ben, because when Naomi landed on the island, she honestly seemed surprised that there were survivors. Of course, she could have been lying, as she was lying about the boat being Penelope’s, but still. Ben’s capable of anything, and getting fake docs and pictures nailing Widmore for the fakiness doesn’t seem beyond his powers.
This is the first episode in a long time that didn’t bring in anything too new, which is kinda nice. I ean, we already knew that Michael was doing all the sabotaging, but that whole bomb thing was a little weird.
And ok, there is the whole Libby thing. I guess I’m just going to take it on faith that the island makes people see dead people, but dead people don’t actually do anything except sort of speak for the island, right? So Libby was telling Michael not to do it, but Ben is supposedly trying to protect the island, soooooo….
Just so confused. Discuss.
Seriously, it’s amazing that people keep working for and trusting Ben, although I guess even Sayid (who is THE MAN) ends up doing that in the end, so are we, too,

Alas, I knew Carl was destined to die when he spoke the cursed actors phrase, “Something doesn’t feel right about this.” Poor Carl.
The whole Libby thing, let’s see. She is somehow a puppet of Widmore’s, seeing as how she was the one who originally gave Desmond the boat. And if you believe in the time machine theory, she could be her alternate-life self appearing to Michael/Kevin.
I don’t think either Ben or Widmore is a good guy, they’re both looking out for their own interests. The survivors are just out of luck.
I thought it was weird that Sayid went all tattle-tale on Michael/Kevin, when Sayid’s been warned not to trust the captain. And obviously it was M/K who opened the door for them so that they could get to the radio room. Sayid just holds a grudge, I guess.
I’m interested to see the “temple”, although waiting a month for the next episode might just kill me!
Comment #1 by Mother of the Wild BoysMarch 21st, 2008 at 3:57 pmOoooh, TOTALLY forgot about Libby giving Desmond the boat. That does change things a bit. Means she’s acting perhaps NOT in the island’s best interests.
I was surprised Sayid went all tattle-tale, too, but yeah, he was pretty pissed about what Michael did.
And what’s this about having to wait a MONTH? I was not aware. Dang it.
Comment #2 by Heather O.March 21st, 2008 at 4:00 pmLibby’s appearances were the most intriguing parts of this episode. Everything else was given away in the previews. Dang. I seriously must stop watching those. Lost isn’t nearly as much fun. Oh, but I didn’t guess Carl and Danielle would be sniper-fodder. Carl’s definitely gone, but Danielle may still be kicking.
There’s more to Libby’s story. Remember she was in the mental hospital with Hurley before the crash. I’m interested in her back story.
And, yeah, dumb writers strike. Yet another hiatus.
Comment #3 by AhnaMarch 21st, 2008 at 4:37 pmI am liking your site. I love Lost too! I liked the episode. I thought it gave a lot of information. But I agree, more mysteries too. I am not sure about Libby. I think you can only “appear” if you have died and somehow Ben has some way to “speak” to the dead and they do his bidding (?). Anyway, I am liking this season. Strange, but good.
Comment #4 by KatieMarch 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pmSo, no one’s mentioned yet who they think shot Danielle (right name, right?) and Carl. BEN sent them to the temple. And Alex was right next to both of them but didn’t die. Or is this obvious and that’s why no one’s mentioned it?
How sad is it that I forgot that Michael shot the two people? They showed that flashback and I was like, “Holy cow!” I need to watch all the seasons again. You forget so many things.
Did Naomi actually say it was Penelope’s boat? Or did she just have a picture of Desmond and Penelope? Because wasn’t Penny’s dad involved in Desmond ending up on the island (more or less), so he’d know Desmond was there? Who knows how much she knew, though she seems like she’d be the one who knew the most.
This next month will be SO boring before all the shows start up again. Maybe I’ll get some cleaning done.
Comment #5 by Erin MarieMarch 21st, 2008 at 9:46 pmI think that Ben set Carl and Danielle up completely. Noone else knew where they were going. Ben probably had his little island friends kill them off to get out of the way. UNLESS…it was the men who were having target practice on the boat. UGH!!
I’m very interested with the fact that Sayid spilled the beans about Michael to the captain. I think Sayid is just really looking for some answers.
Comment #6 by D'On MMarch 21st, 2008 at 11:07 pmMy guess who killed Danielle and Karl: Good ol’ Patchy. The man has nine lives and loves to kill people on Ben’s orders. But I could be completely wrong - like I am on most of my Lost plot guesses.
I also thought it was interesting that the “island” wouldn’t let Michael die. Is that why when Jack tried to kill himself by jumping off the bridge something happened and he couldn’t do it. Is that why Sayid didn’t die after he was shot by his I’m-working-for-Widmore girlfriend? Just a random thought.
Comment #7 by ZinkaMarch 22nd, 2008 at 12:10 pmThe folks who killed Karl and shot Danielle (I don’t think she’s dead) are the special forces guys from the ship. Remember that the helicopter disappeared for a while.
Comment #8 by ClarkMarch 22nd, 2008 at 2:55 pmClark, I agree. The question now is did Ben set that up? Or at least, did he know the consequences of sending Alex, Rousseau, and Karl to the temple? He wants Karl dead, but it seems a big risk for Alex.
If he set it up, does he have another man on the boat?
Comment #9 by AhnaMarch 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pmI agree Sayid wants some answers, and that he’s pretty mad at Michael. Michael shot two of their own - just like Shannon was shot. . . probably a pretty painful similarity for Sayid. Still doesn’t explain why he’d march up to the captain and tattle. Unless he wants to leave the island that badly.
Widmore & Ben - what’s their connection? I wonder if we’ll ever know!
I count the O6 as Jack, Kate, Hurley, Jin, Sun, and Sayid. But the previews showed Aaron as one of the 6, NOT Jin. What the. . . ???
Comment #10 by NicholeMarch 23rd, 2008 at 12:02 pmNichole-
Jin is supposedly dead.
Comment #11 by Heather O.March 23rd, 2008 at 3:01 pmI thought Sayid going all cop on Michael was strange. He is usually more reserved in his judgments. If there’s anyone that will think clearly and look at all sides it’s Sayid. He just gave the captain a ton of info when he doesn’t even know if he should trust him yet.
The captain is bad. Widmore is most likely bad. Ben is super bad, though I truly believe he believes his intentions are based in higher morals (kind of a Nephi slays Laban thing). Sayid’s reaction was crazy. I don’t think Danielle is dead. Her character’s too cool. Also, it didn’t necessarily look like blood on Carl, so maybe neither of them are dead.
This episode may explain why Sayid ends up working for Ben. Sayid may be the downfall of his friends- by trusting the captain and thereby aiding Widmore in his plan to exterminate everyone on the island (if that truly is his plan). At that point Sayid’s self-inflicted penance would be to join forces with Ben (who has all the info on Widmore) to avenge his friends and possibly rescue those left alive.
Great episode. Sad about Walt. We still don’t know how Michael and Walt found rescue. And what’s with the man-boy love with the old pirate guy? Was that somehow necessary? Though it does match up with when he told Kate, “You’re not my type”. But still, why do we need to know? Icky.
Oh, I don’t remember if this has been discussed previously, but I believe Ben has access to some sort of “teleporter” mode of transportation. This is why blowing up the sub was no big deal.Ben can come and go anytime. This may also be how he is still communicating with the others. And that therapist girl a few weeks ago just disappeared. They always hear voices when that happens. It’s almost as if people are in a parallel dimension that can be heard but not seen.
That’s enough for now. I love this show!
Comment #12 by solMarch 23rd, 2008 at 5:32 pmOooo, oooo! DH just watched the one where Sun gives birth, and Sayid meets Michael on the boat. In that episode, the helicopter is gone, and Desmond asks where it is. He’s told that Leidipos (or whatever that pilot’s name is) went on an errand to the island. That MUST be the people who shot Danielle and Carl.
I have to say, sol, that I think they’re dead. Sorry. I do think Jin’ alive, though, and I dig your theory about why Sayid would be working for Ben–that turning Michael in like that blew some very important cover stories.
Comment #13 by Heather O.March 23rd, 2008 at 5:44 pmYes, they’re probably dead. Carl was kind of wimpy anyway, so who cares. But Danielle was so cool! I just wanted her to play some sort of heroine role in the end. Oh well.
So, if people from the freighter killed Danielle and Carl, then Ben really wasn’t sending them to their deaths? It would make sense that when Alex yelled she was Ben’s daughter they didn’t shoot, knowing they could use her to get to Ben. Good theory. But where does that leave Ben? When he looked and saw Carl’s hand around Alex’s waste I thought right then he was going to have Carl killed (because he wants to own Alex and he doesn’t want her pregnant), but maybe that’s just what the writers want us to think. Maybe he really does have some selfless love for Alex and seeing them together he wanted to protect both of them because he wants her to be happy. I wonder if in the end we will see that Ben’s intentions were always good, just flawed in the execution (no pun intended). Maybe this whole show is just a lesson in the relative nature of good and evil.
