First of all, that quickfire was ODD and I never knew butchery skills were required for a Top Chef. Second of all, I love red meat in all its forms, and I was craving steak the whole episode. Third of all, Spike may have found his calling as a butcher.
However odd that quickfire may have been, that was one of the COOLEST elimination challenges ever. Absolutely perfect for discovering who’s got it going on and who doesn’t. Loved it, and still really want a steak.
Richard - his policy of under promise, over deliver has been working supremely well for him. It rocked restaurant wars, and it rocked here.
Stephanie JUST ROCKS and I want to be her BFF.
Antonia may just win it all, she is such an intelligent woman and a smart chef, she knows exactly what to cook for each situation (perfect steak house food, perfect kid food, etc.) The woman has a brain in her head that she uses well, and I want her to come hang out with me and Stephanie LOTS.
Spike and Lisa were so clearly outclassed here, it was almost embarrassing. Those scallops were a nightmare, and even though Spike won the quickfire, it seemed to hurt him here rather than help him out. I don’t know why he went for scallops, maybe he thought ’sabotage’ again, but nobody was crying over not doing frozen scallops. And insulting the judges AGAIN (well, you had the scallops) just didn’t seem to work out for him here. Sayonara, Spike. Go open a butcher shop and sell hats on the side.
Lisa was the second worse again. Whatever. She will be a non entity in the finals, unless she starts to mess with other people’s food. Yeah, we’ll have to listen to her whine, but that what mute is for, yes?
Anyone else find it interesting that Antonia had the favorite entree (it looked so good) and Richard had the favorite appetizer but Stephanie still won? She’s JUST THAT COOL.
Ok, then, well we obviously have a final four. I’m going to guess that the final two will be Richard and Steph, but I can’t be positive on that. Antonia is pretty awesome.
Winner: Don’t care much, but I’ll root for Steph. I didn’t watch season one, except in reruns, but in season two I really wanted Sam to win, season three I was rooting for Casey, (although it was pretty obvious Hung was the standout), but this time I would be thrilled with any of the top three. Any one of them deserves it, but having a favorite makes it more fun to watch, so GO STEPH. (or GO RICHARD, or GO ANTONIA).
(I want a steak that’s been basted with tons of butter like Antonia made in the quickfire. GO CARDIOLOGY)
(OOOH! I just went and read Tom’s blog on bravotv.com, and he says he would have sent Lisa home last week. D-OH! I wish he’d been there.)

There is a human being named Hung? Wow.
Oh and now I want steak too.
Comment #1 by JamiMay 29th, 2008 at 9:30 amI read Tom’s blog last night too! It makes it all that much more bitter that Dale is gone. It would have been so much more interesting as a final four with Dale. I had to laugh at the comments on the Bravo blog- everyone, positively everyone, hates Lisa. It’s enough to almose make me feel bad. Almost. She’s just so unpleasant.
Antonia is the darkhorse here- I never picked her for the final four, but she does a good job, and she also seems like a really nice person.
And, I finally learned why my steaks are not as good as a restaurant: I don’t boil them in BUTTER!
Comment #2 by Tracy MMay 29th, 2008 at 10:13 amLooking at Lisa’s sour puss is just so painful. Please, make it stop. Make it stop.
Hurray for the other three finalists!
I miss Dale.
Comment #3 by bythelbsMay 29th, 2008 at 10:19 amActually I’d say the ability to cut meat is required for a top chef. Didn’t in the first season they do a similar challenge only with a particularly difficult cut of fish? Or am I think of of The Next Iron Chef? I know one of them did it.
Antonia has been growing on me. I didn’t like her initially.
I just can’t believe Lisa made it to the final four though. Something is so wrong. At least it wasn’t Nikki though, I guess. It’s too bad as I’d have been intrigued to see what Dale would have served last night.
Tracy, butter is great. But my business partner has the most amazing steaks and uses this cream sauce while grilling them. They are so ridiculously great. A lot of what makes a really great steak though is also the choice of meat and the cut. Especially when you are doing a relatively simple dish. I’m not a huge steak guy so I’m anything but an expert here. But my business partner is big into it. I think he cooks better steaks than any I’ve had at any restaurant.
I really liked last night’s challenge. The only challenge this year I missed over last was the “go into a top restaurant and reproduce one of their top meals.” That was awesome last year when Hung aced it. Hung was cocky as heck but a dang great chef.
Comment #4 by ClarkMay 29th, 2008 at 10:25 amYah, everything on bravo says cutting is required. So I guess I’m wrong there. I still miss Dale.
Comment #5 by The WizMay 29th, 2008 at 10:36 amSigh. Can we at least change Lisa’s name to Spike? It fits better. She’s so abrasive, I couldn’t believe the one shot of her telling Richard to get out of her way. Please.
Mmmm. Beef broiled in butter. Nothing better. I am so craving steak now. Never heard of a tomahawk steak before. Wow. Huge. But looked oh so good. Tom really knows his stuff regarding steak, I need to get a reservation in LA at Craft it seems.
Spike having grandfathers who were both butchers really helped him out. Now if only his grandmothers were chefs, he would have aced this one. Poor Spike, his exit interviews are pitiful. Wanting to blame his choice on what was in the walk-in when he had first choice, priceless.
Lesson learned from this week to last? Don’t lead with scallops. Ever. Too picky to work with unless you have complete control of the meal, including your emotions.
Stephanie, Richard, and Antonia in the finals. Yes. The only one missing is Dale. And it was darn hard to read that Lisa would have gone home last week if he were judging. aaack. Well, she’s not part of the team - the mature team - and she won’t last long at all in PR. Thank goodness.
The other three have control over their emotions in the kitchen, it should be interesting to watch the competition next week. I’m rooting for Richard. I won’t be disappointed to see Steph win if she does, and I still think Antonia is a dark horse.
Comment #6 by chroniclerMay 29th, 2008 at 10:50 amClark, I love butter. I LOVE butter. Now that I know the secret to a good steak, I plan on giving it a try- just as soon as I get a home defibrulator.
Comment #7 by Tracy MMay 29th, 2008 at 11:20 amI’m amazed Spike and Lisa even made it this far, when they’ve both been in the bottom sooo many times (I think they said 7 for Spike and 5 for Lisa?)
I like Stephanie a lot, but I think I’m going to root for Richard. I might change my mind though. Antonia I think I’d be fine with winning too, though her pop up to the top was a bit unexpected for me. I guess as long as Lisa loses, I will be happy. The other three always cook such great looking food. And they seem like nice people.
Comment #8 by kaduseyMay 29th, 2008 at 11:45 amRichard is who I want to win although I like Stephanie a lot as well.
Scallops if done right are fantastic. The best food ever. And frozen scallops don’t mean they are bad and getting fresh scallops in most places is a lost cause. Of course if you are in Nova Scotia…
Comment #9 by ClarkMay 29th, 2008 at 4:34 pmLate replying… but.. I so enjoyed last night… I totally ignored spike and lisa.. knew one was going home… thought spike because he was more obnoxious… but just enjoyed the cooking..and commraderie (sp?? I am tooo tired to care) among the top three, and just waited for the winner… do not care who wins this year either.. love them all… hope lisa gets sent home real soon so I can just enjoy…

Butter makes everything better. BUTTER. Ah…..
Comment #11 by The WizMay 30th, 2008 at 1:32 pmButter? Have you read The Pioneer Woman Cooks blog? She keeps whole dairy herds busy.
Comment #12 by ResearcherMay 30th, 2008 at 3:50 pmI have not, but I like her already. Seriously, I would eat butter plain if I could get away with it- my children do!
Comment #13 by Tracy MMay 30th, 2008 at 6:30 pmShort aside, when I was small and would go to granpa’s for dinner, we’d have steak slathered in butter. Once it came off the grill he’d pile a big slab of butter on and tell us to eat. No one didn’t eat. Steak and peaches was always the fare. I still remember it fondly.
I love Pioneer Woman!
