By Heather O.
I have a new calling. It’s a stake calling. It’s a public affairs calling, which, when I tell everybody about it, most people say, “Um, what?”
The man from the stake said that the public affairs director requested me specifically. He said she said she knew me. Since I definitely didn’t know her, I thought he was probably mistaken. So, to me, it remained a mystery how these people got my name. Then the affairs director called me, we had a lovely chat, and I will be meeting with her tomorrow. But I asked her, just out of curiosity, how she got my name.
“Well, I read your blog….”
Seriously, if GETTING A STAKE CALLING BECAUSE OF THE BLOG isn’t a good enough reason to take a break, I don’t know what is.
Which brings me to the real point: With vacations, etc, coming up, I think things are going to be kinda slow around here for the next few weeks. I’ll check in now and then, though. Hopefully. If I survive my stake calling AND the flight across the country, that is.

That’s great! What a world we live in. I guess I better be careful what I blog about!
Comment #1 by CamilleJuly 29th, 2008 at 7:26 pmWell, you know what you need to do if you reach the point where you want to be released.
Comment #2 by RayJuly 29th, 2008 at 8:13 pmUm. Congratulations? Or something?
Wow. Maybe I need to start blogging with that in mind. Blog about how I like to smack my kids around so that I won’t get called into nursery and so forth.
Is it weird to say I’ll miss you?
Comment #3 by SueJuly 29th, 2008 at 8:41 pmActually, I thought about it and I decided that yes, yes it is kind of weird to say that. I take it back.
But have a nice vacation :>
Comment #4 by SueJuly 29th, 2008 at 8:42 pmYeah, I’ll be AWOL for a while, too.
Congrats on the calling. Did you panic for just a sec when she said that? I would’ve!
Comment #5 by Tracy MJuly 29th, 2008 at 8:48 pmCongratulations, I’m sure you’ll do a super job, with whatever your calling requires. What does it require or rather, what specifically will you be doing?
Anyway, I’ll miss your posts.
Comment #6 by AbbyJuly 29th, 2008 at 9:17 pmWhy is everyone going AWOL?
Comment #7 by meemsJuly 29th, 2008 at 9:21 pmLate summer, meems! Vacations, family visiting, travel, that kind of stuff. We’ll still be posting, but it might be slower for a few days here and there. If anyone has/wants to guest post, email us. Now’s the time we’re open to it!
Comment #8 by Tracy MJuly 29th, 2008 at 9:29 pmI need to get released from nursey, but I don’t think anyone from my ward reads my blog. Probably inappropriate to put it in the bulletin, huh?
Comment #9 by TJJuly 30th, 2008 at 7:22 amSue-
I’ll miss you too. In a non-stalker, cyber friends, not ever having actually met you and probably will never cross your path in real life but I think your blog is wet your pants funny kind of way.
meems-
At one point or another this month, all the permabloggers will be out of town. I won’t tell you when or where they are going to be, because then I’d have to kill you.
Comment #10 by Heather O.July 30th, 2008 at 7:36 amCrikey! I would feel so invaded!!
Have fun on your vacations, although I think everybody’s kids should only get 6 weeks like mine did…
Comment #11 by Semi-AnonJuly 30th, 2008 at 8:21 amYup, that’s why I don’t bash the ward in my blog, afraid someone may eventually read it. I keep my frustrations to myself.
Comment #12 by SarahJuly 30th, 2008 at 1:18 pmWhen I started my personal blog last fall, I found out there are a lot of people in my ward who blog. I have actually discovered a lot of amazing and fantastic things about them - parenting struggles, life lessons learned, perspectives and insights on a variety of topics - things we don’t have time to discuss in the hall between church meetings and our callings/families/responsibilities. Our blogs have become a network of support. I see them at church and am relieved they have challenges and joys just like I do. (Which I always knew in theory, but the reality was previously more hidden from public view…) Stereotypical pretenses are gone. We are left with acceptance and friendships, even when our “warts” are known.
And it’s a great way to stay in contact when a friend moves.
Congrats on your new calling, Heather. From what I know about public affairs and what I know about you from the blogosphere, you will be really good at it! I wouldn’t worry too much about the affairs director’s impressions of you - if they come from reading MMW, it’s all good!
Comment #13 by Michelle AMJuly 30th, 2008 at 5:04 pm~Hmmm must blog about my loathing of all things teenagerish, actually on second thoughts, that might be the surest way to be called into YW…which would mean I would have to stab myself with a rusty fork.
Comment #14 by HelenAugust 1st, 2008 at 9:01 amI’ll play with you guys! I totally would love to be a part of this website!! Check out my site and let me know! Have fun on your vacations, BTW.
Comment #15 by KristaAugust 3rd, 2008 at 4:18 pmUm, yeah. We all oughta self-edit by assuming that anyone and everyone reads our blog.
Comment #16 by BookslingerAugust 5th, 2008 at 12:26 pmWeird to read this post today. My Stake President called this am and asked to come by. He extended a calling as the Stake Director of Public Affairs. I know he doesn’t read my blog, it’s not all that interesting.
