Rumor mills and Mormon myths debunked16 Oct 2008 06:17 pm
By Heather O.
I was told tonight that at a recent Stake Conference in California, Pres. Uchtdorf said that in the near future, our children will have to get used to eating one meal a day.
Anybody care to comment on this as fact or fiction? Sounds fishy to me, but my source said, “That’s what he said….”

I’m not holding my breath on that one.
Comment #1 by emOctober 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pmooh… i just love a good rumor.
Comment #2 by AlissaOctober 16th, 2008 at 6:35 pmPeople come up with the weirdest stuff. This one is a doozy.
Whenever I hear something like this that I just can’t believe, I simply say, “Wow. When and where did he say that?” If they can’t give me a source, I dismiss it out of hand.
Comment #3 by RayOctober 16th, 2008 at 6:41 pmHe must care about the little children in California lots more than he cares about ours in Salt Lake, because he neglected to brace us for this hardship when he addressed our stake conference three weeks ago. It just isn’t fair! {snort}
Comment #4 by Ardis ParshallOctober 16th, 2008 at 6:51 pmArdis, I’m just jealous you got to have Pres. Uchtdorf at all! He’s so dreamy…
Comment #5 by Tracy MOctober 16th, 2008 at 6:54 pmMaybe he said something like, “it wasn’t so far back when children had to eat one meal a day, and it’s not unheard of that might happen again” or something like that….
But I didn’t hear him, and do not want to be perpetuating such a rumor….
Comment #6 by The WizOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:12 pmAnd, it will be un-ground wheat, for those of us without non-electric wheat grinders.
Comment #7 by HilaryOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:15 pmOur poor, poor children.
Tracy, there were something like 34,000 of us in the conference center — I winked, but I don’t think he noticed.
Yes, our poor, poor children.
Comment #8 by Ardis ParshallOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:23 pmMaybe, Ardis, it’s just the kids in CALIFORNIA that will have that, but not Utah, and he was tailoring his remarks accordingly.
Comment #9 by The WizOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:28 pmYeah, Wiz, that must be it. Maybe in California they already [Prop] 8 all their food storage. Yuk yuk.
Comment #10 by Ardis ParshallOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pmOh, Ardis. I needed that. I haven’t heard it yet. Maybe it is a very LARGE meal. Can’t you just split the meal 3 ways?
Comment #11 by KatieOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pmDidn’t hear it. Maybe I was playing hooky that day, but no one has mentioned to me either.
Ardis, nice one.
Comment #12 by JamiOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:45 pmNo actually we here in the mission field are known as slackers.
We just don’t take good advice until we’ve heard it from a Prophet in person. You know you can’t trust the interwebs and they can edit tv and video to say anything.
It’s obvious that someone wasn’t paying attention or maybe it was just that stake. Dallin Oaks was at ours a couple of weeks ago and never mentioned famine in the land.
Comment #13 by chronicler/robynOctober 16th, 2008 at 7:46 pmI’m just glad I’m not the only one who thinks Elder Uchtdorf is kind-of dreamy. Is that weird?
(Seriously, though, he is a very handsome man.)
Comment #14 by WingnutOctober 16th, 2008 at 8:25 pmWhat part of California was this alleged to take place in? I’m in Fremont, and we haven’t heard anything like it up here. (Was it at a single stake conference, or a satellite broadcast multi-stake conference?)
Comment #15 by Keri BrooksOctober 16th, 2008 at 9:10 pmWingnut: Not to mention the accent.
Comment #16 by KatieOctober 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pmI think it must have been a “secret stake conference”
And oh, yeah, he’s definitely dreamie.
Comment #17 by The WizOctober 16th, 2008 at 9:47 pmI’ve totally heard that before!!! And I remember it being more like Wiz’ first comment (#6).
Comment #18 by SallygirlOctober 16th, 2008 at 11:48 pmEven if you could provide multiple reliable witnesses that Uchtdorf said that at a stake conference, it wouldn’t count because those witnesses would be disregarding the counsel of the First Presidency about passing on what GAs say at stake conference.

Comment #19 by Last LemmingOctober 17th, 2008 at 7:11 amYeah, pretty sure that would have been mentioned in General Conference. Kind of like the lady in my mom’s ward who had a dream about a stake conference where all the people who had food storage went to a separate session and were told that there was a major disaster coming and they were to load their food storage onto trucks and go to the bunkers in the mountains that the church had. But only those in Utah (because frankly the rest of you aren’t righteous enough) who had food storage would be saved.
Comment #20 by Amber @ Soggy CheeriosOctober 17th, 2008 at 9:38 amCool, you mean I’ll only have to serve one meal a day?
Comment #21 by momof8October 17th, 2008 at 2:02 pmless dishes, this could be a good thing
Comment #22 by SarahOctober 17th, 2008 at 5:41 pmSo I get home tonight and find that a friend has forwarded to me an email purportedly from a woman whose mother is in Pres. Packer’s ward, claiming that he took over their fast and testimony meeting last week for a long talk about pending disaster along the same lines as this made-up thing from Pres. Uchtdorf. And this woman, doncha know, has the presence of mind to whip a pen and notebook out of her purse and take down every word (hey, don’t we all do that? super secretaries, all of us, with our steno pads tucked into the diaper bags next to the Cheerios), then she types it up and sends it to everybody she knows. It is signed simply “Jen.”
It would be funny except that whoever made it up faked an apostolic blessing, which to me has crossed the line to the unacceptable.
Two questions: How long will it take to have this forwarded to every member with an email account? How long will it be before Pres. Packer has to issue a formal statement refuting this trash for what it is?
Look, we all know — have known practically forever — what we should be doing, and we can’t pretend we haven’t been given timely, calm, and reasonable instructions. And we all ought to know that should the apostles ever have a special warning, it will be given to us all, through channels we recognize and respect, and not whispered to favored congregations and passed around in email.
End of the seriousness, and back to the mocking. If we’re only going to be eating one meal per day, I want mine to be steak and strawberries.
Comment #23 by Ardis ParshallOctober 17th, 2008 at 6:17 pmIf it were true, it would NOT be a secret or rumor. It would have been or will be announced in conference, church, or if it’s that impending at home. The leaders of our church want us ALL to know something vital and/or life saving. People are hilarious… Isn’t Steve Martin LDS?? (j/k, more ‘insider’ info.)
Comment #24 by 2boys1crazyMomOctober 17th, 2008 at 7:00 pmSteve Martin’s not, but Ricky Schroder is. (Twelve year-old crushing) Swoon!
Comment #25 by SallygirlOctober 17th, 2008 at 7:19 pmArdis, I just went through my email, and guess what? Same thing. Ten years from now people will still be bearing their testimonies of the time Pres. Packer came to testimony meeting.
Comment #26 by Mark BrownOctober 17th, 2008 at 7:47 pmpres. uchdorf is nice looking - but pres bednar is the cute one. uh oh will i get struck by lightening (j/k) why does california get all the good myths? - lol. should have heard the one years ago about the swine flu.
Comment #27 by beckyOctober 17th, 2008 at 9:01 pmAhh, yes, we received the President Packer email just yesterday.
Comment #28 by NancyOctober 18th, 2008 at 4:40 amThe ‘miracles’ of modern technology. Sigh.
I got the President Packer e-mail, too. My institute teacher (who is not a CES employee) forwarded it. It sounded fishy, but I didn’t have a good source to point her to to rebut it. We need a Mormon Snopes.
Comment #29 by Keri BrooksOctober 18th, 2008 at 9:07 amSteak and strawberries sounds awesome, Ardis.
A Mormon Snopes sounds good, too.
Comment #30 by Heather O.October 18th, 2008 at 5:20 pmMormon snopes…. It would have to be called Mopes, wouldn’t it? I like it.
Comment #31 by mellocelloOctober 18th, 2008 at 9:35 pmHey, the same person who told me about Elder Uchtdorf’s revelation just pulled me aside this email she got about Pres. Packer. My, these things do move fast….
Comment #32 by Heather O.October 19th, 2008 at 11:31 amThere sort of is a Mormon Snopes, though unfortunately, it looks like it isn’t updated very often. http://www.shields-research.org/Hoaxes/LDSWorld_Internet_Hoaxes_and_Mormon_Urban_Legends.htm
Comment #33 by FirebyrdOctober 19th, 2008 at 12:49 pmI got the President Packer thing twice and then got an apology from one of the senders today. Another person to whom she sent it actually called the Church’s Public Affairs office to verify it and it was soundly rejected.
Pres. U IS dreamy!!! I have met him in person several years ago and then a few weeks ago he came into a restaurant with his wife and another couple (his son maybe?) where we were having lunch and sat at the table next to us. He looks and sounds as dreamy as he did over a decade ago!
Yes, I am in SLC. I think the quote is baloney (no pun intended!).
Maybe that is one way to lose my pregnancy chub though!
Comment #34 by RubiaOctober 19th, 2008 at 3:58 pm#34 is mostly right
here is what the Church’s Public Affairs office really said

Comment #35 by richOctober 19th, 2008 at 10:52 pmHe said it. But he was talking about Fast Sunday.
Comment #36 by Mark B.October 20th, 2008 at 12:12 pmIt is true…and the meal will be secretly left on your front porch delivered by one of the three nephites, now that they started their own delivery service called “Manna” but they don’t deliver on Sunday, so your kids will have to get used to no meals on that day.
Comment #37 by Camille MachenOctober 21st, 2008 at 6:06 amThat’s highly unlikely, especially because we all have our food storage shelves bursting at the seams :0)

Comment #38 by ShandraOctober 25th, 2008 at 9:37 pmI am just laughing at all these comments. So funny. I want to hear about Mopes when it goes live.
