I saw Newsies 17 times when it came out. My sister had a crush on someone (not Christian Bale), and would buy my ticket if I drove her to the theater. I didn’t have anything else to do, so we went. It was like Twilight for our generation. Yeah.
I think it’s Christian Bale’s horribly over emphasized fake Brooklyn accent and all the hats placed ‘just so’ on all the boys that gets me. I can’t sick back and enjoy without mocking mercilessly. “Uh-oh, don’t let that beret get jostled!” “Will someone get this boy a dialect coach?” And when Bill Pullman starts dancing on the table, I’m sorry….What?
I don’t get it either. But i always fall asleep in the first 45 minutes or so, so maybe it’s not really fair to say until I actually watch it to the end. If that ever happens.
Watched Newsies for the first time this summer. Don’t get it either. I guess I always preferred dancing, singing, MEN. Like brother Benjamin in 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. Or Gene Kelly in Brigadoon. Mmmmmm……. Now we’re talking. Now, where’s that remote?
Benjamin is the only brother who can’t dance. Watch the movie very closely, and you’ll see he is in almost no dance scenes, or he’s doing something else while everybody else is dancing. The actor who plays Gideon was hired because he was an acrobat, as was Frank. The scene they do with the planks and stuff is completely real–no effects. Also, one of them, I forget which one (Ephraim, maybe?), was hired from the Joffrey Ballet. Yes, I’m geeking out about Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I’m that lame.
I think that the youngest Gideon was the ballet dancer, at least that’s what my mom always said when ever we watched the movie. I just finished watching it again, All8 reminded me it had been awhile since I last watched it.
And even though Howard Keel (adam) doesn’t do it for me I love most of his other movies.
Sorry, Moddy, your mom is incorrect. Gideon was an acrobat, not a ballet dancer. The casting directors were severely limited in who they could cast. Labor/union laws concerning actors were very different then, and they basically got handed a list from the studio and said, “Here. These are the only people you can hire.” There weren’t many male dancers in the bunch, so they picked 2 acrobats who could tumble, figuring that they could probably manage dance moves. Their limited pool made it so they had to hire Benjamin, a completely non-dancing actor, and then they persuaded the Joffrey Ballet guy to join whatever union thingie they had going so they could hire him.
What can I say, I have the special edition DVD with lots of extras.
And Tracy, seriously? Wow. I love that movie. Couldn’t really get through tbe book, though. Sorry, Sarah and Cheryl. I thought it was a bit of a snooz-a-thon.
Thanks Heather, I’ll let my mom know. And really does it matter if Benjamin can dance or not, I really think they cast him for his eye candyness.
Oh and love princess bride, even my kids quote lines from that movie and they are 7 & 4.
I love Newsies, anybody know if you can get it on DVD?

I Heart (I tried to make a heart, maybe that’s how it got all weird?) Newsies. Sigh.
I love 7 brides for 7 brothers, too! Benjamin was also my favorite.
