FYI: Candy recall. Pirate gold coins contain melamine29 Oct 2008 07:37 am

Just a quick link for everybody about this candy that has tested positive for melamine, the substance that is at the heart of the milk-tainted crisis in China. You can read more about it here. Have a safe Halloween, everyone.

That’s exactly why I haven’t bought any Halloween candy yet. I worry that I’ll be killing my kids with “kindness”. And then there is the fact that I’d probably eat a bag or two myself and my kids still need their mom. Argh. Popcorn balls anyone?
Comment #1 by All8October 29th, 2008 at 8:14 amFWIW, Snopes (as of yesterday) was saying that this only applies to the coins that were sold in Canada.
Comment #2 by JimDOctober 29th, 2008 at 10:21 amI don’t ever see pirate gold coins anymore, but I’ll steal them if I have to.
Comment #3 by The WizOctober 29th, 2008 at 10:26 amNone of the tainted coins made it into the US apparently… just FYI.
Comment #4 by CarrieOctober 29th, 2008 at 10:33 amFoil-covered chocolate coins always seem like more of a Christmas season thing to me than a Halloween treat. They are associated in my head, honestly, with Hanukkah, and the dreidel game, because the first time I remember having any was after playing the dreidel game as part of a day in 4th grade where we learned about Hanukkah. Hannah’s parents even came in and made latkes for us. I thought they were gross (I didn’t realize until about 4 years ago that they were just horribly burned and that normally latkes are delicious).
All of which has very little to do with the topic of the post. I just thought it was interesting that I saw the gold chocolate coins at Target yesterday sort of in between some Halloween stuff and some Christmas stuff, and opted to not buy any because it’s not the winter holiday season yet. Plus, you know, I don’t need to sit here at my desk eating waxy chocolate all day.
