Things that suck19 May 2009 03:09 pm

Ants.
Ticks.
Car repairs.
That pretty much sums up my day.
I’m thinking about going to bed early, because after all that, the rest of the day is pretty much just a wash. Tomorrow has to be better, right? Of course, there will still be the matter of the expensive car repairs. And nothing makes you feel poorer than trying to come up with money to pay for a car you hate to run for a limited amount of time before the next major meltdown. Lovely.
Hmmm..maybe I’d better go to bed for a week.

We’re starting in on the yearly large cockroach infestation here. I need to start being way more diligent about vacuuming the dead ones up before my son decides to eat any more of them (one ingested so far and counting).
Comment #1 by kaduseyMay 19th, 2009 at 3:13 pmAnts. I can’t stand them. It has something to do with being accidentally left alone outside the house as a 6 yr old and then inadvertently sitting on an ant hill and being swarmed . . .
Anyway, I too have had an ant problem, but I think I just figured out this last week how to fix it. We got some diatomaceous earth and sprinkled it near the perimeter of our house where we suspect the ants have been getting in. (We also sprinkled it along the perimeter of our kitchen, but after reading a bit more about it and the safety warnings, I think that was probably a bad idea given our 2 year old). Anyway, I’ve never used diatomaceous earth before but it looks like it has very rapidly solved our infestation. The great thing about it is that diatomaceous earth works as a mechanical pesticide, not a chemical one. It is made up of microscopic diatoms–it is like making your ants walk through glass or eat glass or something like that. Anyway,non-toxic and effective works for me! If you try this, do read more about it before you try it because I do think we should have been more careful not to breathe it. Glass isn’t poisonous, but if you swallow or breathe pieces of it, it might hurt you!

Comment #3 by Melissa McMay 19th, 2009 at 5:34 pmI have nightmares about ants. That is seriously my worst. fear. EVER. One time, I saw some in our new house. Luckily, I have several cans of Raid, JUST IN CASE. I sprayed them. They died on contact. They have not returned. This was 6 months ago.

Comment #5 by Michelle AMMay 20th, 2009 at 12:05 pmErgh. My hubby patches together one vehicle only to have the other break down. Frustrating.
Comment #6 by mormonhermitmomMay 20th, 2009 at 12:39 pmWe get ants in the house every year. The last few years they are all over the kitchen counter sucking my DH mountain dew like it’s morphine.
My sister stayed with us last year…and some how eliminated them…while I was off having a baby.
They are back this year…but seem very afraid of the counter…so instead they are hanging out on the changing table. Plop the baby on there to clean her up from meals and food particles are of course everywhere…so they found the jackpot.
Nothing like laying your kid down to change them…and your grabbing ants that are trying to crawl onto the baby. The best part if when she see’s them and grabs them and eats them. yippee
