I’m a Goodreads.com stalker. I love this website. I have more books listed “to-read” than I could possibly read in a lifetime…but I love adding books to my list! My favorite Sunday afternoon activity (did I just admit this publicly?) is perusing the NYTimes Book Review and my local library’s monthly Book Page. Two literary publications I couldn’t live without.
Recently, I discovered that you can enter to win new books or ARC (advance reader copies) at Goodreads. I love contests, but I never win – NEVER, not door prizes, raffles, cake walks, nothing, ever! In fact, I was recently at a PTA State Convention where they were giving away TONS of door prizes. My table had 6 guests – 4 of which one prizes, I was not one of them…come on folks, show me some love! I’m especially bitter about not winning PowerBall each time I go to my home state and buy a $5 ticket, but this is an issue I need to discuss with my Bishop. But guess what, I finally won! I got an email the other day that said, “You are one of our First Reads lucky winners! You will soon receive a free copy of Something Borrowed in the mail. Please allow a few weeks for shipping.” Something Borrowed – I don’t remember signing up for this specific book, but I guess I did. Did the cover look pretty? Was there and interesting tag line? I don’t recall. So, I went back to Goodreads to read the description - well - I can’t print the summary here, but suffice it to say, it is NOT a book I think D&C 88:118 (seek ye out of the best books ) had in mind. Hmmmm…I’m kinda embarrassed I signed up for such a potentially raunchy book. It really took the high out of my unexpected prize! Now, what do I do with it?
Maybe I should stick with PowerBall tickets.

Dh is a goodreads junkie, too. It’s how he gets most of his recommendations for books to check out. But I don’t know if he knows about the contests to win free books there. He wins stuff all the time, though, so maybe he won’t win this since you did and you normally don’t. Congrats on finally breaking your dry spell. Maybe this will open up a whole new world of Powerball winnings for you. Then you’ll really have something to discuss with your bishop.
Comment #1 by StarababaMay 22nd, 2009 at 7:25 pmI could have written this post! The number of raffle tickets I’ve bought at school and church events, the charity lunch door prizes never won…it’s all me.
The big difference would be that when “something borrowed” dropped in my lap unexpectedly, I went ahead and read it! It was not very good but amazingly there are three others that follow it and the movie rights have already been purchased! Who’d have thought?
Comment #2 by Just MomMay 22nd, 2009 at 7:39 pmI had to go look up the book. And can I just say I hate the “one thing leads to another” defense of infidelity? Barf.
Comment #3 by JaneMay 22nd, 2009 at 8:26 pmI read that book a few years ago and liked it. You might be surprised.
Comment #4 by LisaMay 23rd, 2009 at 5:15 amHm. Donate it to the library?

Comment #6 by Lindsay1138May 24th, 2009 at 8:54 pmOoo, Lindsay that’s brilliant! I’m always afraid if I try to do something like that someone will yell at me though. I left a Spiderman action figure at a deserted car wash the other day and spend the rest of the night skulking around the house with all the blinds closed. I’m awesome at acting guilty.
