Irreantum, another Mormon literature magazine, is hosting TWO contests this month. The first is a fiction contest, where any short story or essay will be accepted. The second is a creative non-fiction essay contest, where a personal essay relating to the LDS experience will be accepted. There are cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The kicker is that the deadline is May 31st.
Yes, I am that lame for not giving you a head’s up sooner. Sorry, I’ve been too busy trying to write the winning essay. There are now 2 essays, yes, count them, TWO, that are in my recycle bin after being deleted with disgust, so you know how well I’m doing with that whole writing the winning essay thing….
For more information about specifics, please go here .
Happy writing, and may your recycle bin prove to be emptier than mine when all is said and done.

Heather, thanks so much for publicizing this. And I’m very excited to see that you’re writing for the contest. (And no worries, all you other writers out there: I love me some Heather O., but all contest entires will be read blind and judged by committee, so as much as I’d like to give Heather special treatment, due to her obvious cool-factor and other impressive qualities, alas, I cannot
.
We at Irreantum hope to get lots of quality submissions this year. Even though I have to do a lot of reading every summer, I can honestly say that the contests are one of my favorite parts of editing Irreantum because I love finding new talent and rewarding excellence in Mormon lit.
So write, write, write! Then throw it in the recycle bin. Then reconsider and pull it out again. Then revise. Then proofread. Then send it in. Then win money! Then brag. Then go to dinner with a loved one to celebrate. Then wait for a few months and get a really wonderful paper-and-ink literary magazine in the mail with your words and your name inside it. It’s all quite wonderful, really.
Do enter!

But if I’m doing it for purely bragging rights, can I still pray for help with the essay? Seems like sort of a conflict of interest, doesn’t it?
Hmmm, maybe I should write an essay about it.
