First of all, thank you all for telling me this started last night. I would have missed it, and there’s nothing I like more than a good Top Chef episode, except possibly rehashing it ad nauseum on the blog.
The editors had a tough job of it. I am betting after this first show, they looked at each other, and said something to the effect of “How can we possibly make it look like it was even close? Hubert Keller obviously kicked some serious booty.”
And I’m glad he did, although possibly it’s because he’s the only one I had heard of, so I was rooting for him. So I’m ignorant in the chef world. I’m OK with it, it’s part of what makes ‘Top Chef’ so much fun. And I have now used the word “possibly” 3 times. I will stop now. Probably.
Hubert (I feel we are on a first name basis) was so far ahead in the dessert quickfire, I was almost embarrassed for the other contestants. It was fun to watch, though, of course, and now I want a chicken fried strawberry, whatever that is.
Where is Padma??? Why isn’t she hosting???
Watching them cook in the dorm - priceless. My favorite part was the segment in the middle of the commercials that had all these amazing chefs trying to figure out how to work the microwaves. “I have one, but I mostly use it to warm up the newspaper….” The food looked amazing - especially, well, Hubert’s. I wanted that mac and cheese and the salmon. Did anyone else have ‘Seinfeld’ flashbacks when they saw the food go in the shower? Tom Love’s Pozole looked awesome too. And he froze all his food! Oh, the llama drama! I’m guessing the producers looooved it when they saw him stash his stuff in the freezer. (Yes! A mistake! Awesome!) (I clearly know exactly how TV crews talk - jealous? Hint: they use a lot of exclamation points. Possibly.)
I love the format of four at a time, it makes it so much easier to get to know the chefs before they go. The stars rating system works for me, too, because then we get to see who rated it where, instead of guessing to see how much Tom bullied the other judges into going his way. Not that I don’t love Tom and his bullying, I usually agree with his assessments of food I never got to taste.
The judges will henceforth be know as Hat Lady, Glasses Guy, and Hair Dude. I might just call the host Padma-girl, to keep things simple. I will also lament the lack of Tom Colicchio on a regular basis, because I lurve him.
But oh! Bravo on Wednesday nights! I couldn’t be happier…..
(If you’re singing Wicked right now, you are as much a nerd as I am. Welcome, friend.)
