I learned Sunday that our Stake is doing a salute to Broadway musicals to be performed in April. I was intrigued, but not real inclined to participate. Then I got the call. “We’d really like you to do a number.” O.K. says I, but I thought there were auditions and everything. Doesn’t that mean you’re supposed to be somewhat talented? Apparently not.
As it turns out, tryouts will be held this Thursday and I’m expected to be there with the music for my song choice in hand. Forget about the fact that I really have no time to commit to this little endeavor or that I’m being strong-armed into participating, the real worry is what song to sing!
Being the she-devil that I am, my first thought was to sing one of those quirky numbers from the Tony Award winning Avenue Q, like “The Internet is for Porn” or something like that. But somehow even I’m not quite brave enough for that statement. I also like the vampy numbers like “Whatever Lola wants” from Damn Yankees, or “All That Jazz” from Chicago, but I’m not sure that’s what the director has in mind for a Stake production. So I’m stumped. Thoughts on show tunes anyone?
