They are sweet little birds, and I think were skittish at first about coming back to the box. But with the 10 days of spring break, free of kids, dogs, and gardeners, the chickadees built themselves a cozy little nest with six eggs. I noticed yesterday that the birds kept bringing food to the nest, and today I checked the box. Sure enough, all but two of the eggs have hatched, and tiny, ugly, naked little baby birds are snuggled up in there.
This delights me. To no end. Add in Little Sister dragging a dish towel outside saying, “The baby birds are cold! They need a blanket!” and you have one tickled momma.
So Happy Spring, everybody! The world is a beautiful place to live.
(No, the picture up top is not of my birds, but all chickadees look alike, so it’s good enough. We have not yet replaced our camera after the Great Palmyra Tantrum of 2010.)
