I don’t even know where to start to explain how I feel about this.
It all started on Memorial Day, when my husband came home from a conference and said, “Do you want to go to Haiti for 2 weeks this summer?”
I sat there, dumbfounded, as he explained that he had just met a guy who ran an NGO (non-government organization) called Sustain Haiti who was looking for volunteers to spend 2 weeks in Haiti, specifically to teach sq. foot gardening, among other things.
Well, y’all know I like to garden, and I like to travel, and I have moaned before about the limitations of mothers during disasters. So when your husband tells you that he can flex his work schedule so that you can take 2 weeks and head to Haiti and actually maybe do a little something that might make you feel like you made a teeny tiny difference in the world, wouldn’t you jump at it, too?
Like I said, I’m leaving in a week, and I am amassing lists of things I need to buy/do/ write down for my husband so my children stay alive before I go. I will try to update this blog, or at least maybe link to Sustain Haiti’sblog.
There’s a lot of things I don’t know yet, and I feel a little bit like I’m standing on the edge of a cliff and jumping off, with no idea where or how I’m going to land.
But wherever or however I land, I think it’s going to be amazing.
So if you don’t hear from me for a while, just know that I’m off doing, well, something really really different than I’ve ever done before. And I’ll let you know if I get malaria.
