I have been spending every day, almost, outside all day, so today I took a break from the merciless Haitian sun (I’m already peeling from the deep sunburn I keep getting on my neck–spf 30 has nothing on Haitian sun) and spent the morning sorting through the suitcases of donations for the orphanages. We are trying to figure out the best way to distribute the goods. You’d think it would be easy, right? Just go dump them at the orphanage, for crying out loud.
Okay. Sure. But how do we GET to orphanages? Well, we can either take a tap-tap, or a moto. Neither lends itself very well to carrying heavy loads of stuff, so we would have to take several trips, or have many volunteers carry small loads. But motos are expensive, by Haiti standards. To give you an idea about Haitian money, you can buy 3 “bags” of water here for 5 gourd. 40 gourd is about 1 dollar. A package of cookies, a favorite amoung the volunteers, costs 5 to 10 gourd. A soda costs 25 gourd. A moto ride can cost anywhere from 15 gourd to 125 gourd, depending on how far you go. So do you take suitcases full of stuff on the tap tap? (called that, by the way, because when you want to get off, you either bang on the driver’s window, tap tap, or, if you’re riding on the roof, you bang twice on the roof, tap tap) The tap tap is cheaper than a moto, but crowded and hard to carry luggage.
So, you have to think through these types of things. A lot.
This afternoon, I have more gardening to do, and tomorrow, I probably won’t be able to blog, as it will be a full gardening day. I will finally get to see one of the gardens established at one of the orphanages, which I am hoping is something we can expand on. But again, when you put a garden at an orphanage, you have to think through some things, like, if there is one person taking care of 70 kids, is it feasible to assume he could also tend a garden? Where is his water souce? Is it contaminated, as much of the water is here, thus defeating the purpose entirely? Etc, etc, etc…
I did learn something new today, though. You can compost urine. Sort of. 3 parts water, 1 part urine, you’re good to go. Who knew?
