I admit I can’t remember ever being more excited for a television event, and was worried that last night couldn’t live up to my expectations.
It was awesome.
I love that it’s a competition again, and not a play for charity. I love that the stakes are higher. I love most of the competitors. I am stoked.
I only hope we see Marcel on the roof reciting poetry to himself again, like we did in season 2. Tre is back - yes! I miss Voltaggio, but please put Carla in front of the camera as much as possible.
Fabio seems a little grumpy, I don’t know that he’s thrilled to be there. He’s successful in his restaurant, he’s happy with his life, he doesn’t need the show anymore (which can probably be said for most of them, really), and he doesn’t seem to care as much. He’s still sexy, though.
Quickfire - WHO knew the liquid nitrogen would be pulled out within 5 seconds of shooting? Oh….everyone, and it was a good thing. Yes, Blaise is back with culinary masterpieces like mustard gelato (which sounds absolutely disgusting, but hey, I hate mustard) and he’s showing that he is here to win, and I hope he does. The less I see of Jamie Lauren, the better. She was just “let me make my soup, and screw the rest of you” during the “apple” bit, and it showed. She is a talented chef, and will probably be there for a while, but I can see her crashing and burning during a team challenge. (”MY spicy curry sauce was great! It had scallops! It’s not my fault that you put it on a dessert. I made a great sauce, and that’s all that matters.”)
The elimination was brilliant and harsh at the same time. Getting sent home twice for the same dish - eek. But of course, the whole season has a touch of that - several people are going to get “so close” AGAIN. Heartbreak makes for good TV and signing up for this took guts. We had to see Elia go? When Stephen was up for elimination? COME ON! Reading the blogs, it was clear why, but I would so much rather watch Elia cook than listen to Stephen pontificate.
Except I can’t get over that plate of eyeballs Marcel served the judges during elimination. That sucker deserves elimination for sheer visual gag factor - I don’t care if it tasted good.
Blaise is going to win it all, if he stops making stupid mistakes like tuning out the timer. Dude just cost himself 10K there.
The only thing that bothers me is I’m going to be sad to see everybody go. With the exception of Stephen, Spike, and Mike. They can leave anytime they want. And I wouldn’t shed any tears if Angelo left early, but he probably won’t, because he’s good. Except, of course, everyone’s good, which makes every elimination just one dash of salt away.
Top 3: Richard Blaise, Jen Carroll, and…??? Could be anyone, really.
Next to go: Mike. Just because I don’t want him on my TV anymore.
Oh, and Anthony Bourdain is funny, but I miss Eric Ripert. And a one-on-one with Colicchio is in the works. Sweet. Hope it’s a real one.
