Since Heather apparently can’t do resolutions, I guess I’ll carry the torch around here. I have grown to love them, as long as you follow The Rules:
2. SPECIFIC and MEASURABLE. Vague resolutions do nothing but drive everybody crazy, including yourself.
How did last year’s resolutions go? 2 out of 3. I survived, and I watched a lot of Bones, 2 things I am confident I can carry into the next year. However, the savings thing - not so much. We were not unaffected by the economic downturn, and our happy little plan was not achieved.
Ok - so this year, I resolve to:
1. Be able to touch my toes without bending my knees. Pathetic, I know. I’ve even started 2 Yoga classes a week, and while I have improved dramatically in my flexibility, touching my toes eludes me. My hamstrings - they prefer to sit around and watch TV as opposed to doing any actual work.
2. Food budget. This one’s harder - sticking to a SPECIFIC budget for groceries and eating out. We seem to spend A LOT on food around here, mostly eating in, but again, see above note about the economy, and it would really help if I can set a magic number and stick to it. Quicken’s given me a number, and I think it’s doable. (I always had a general number in my head, but if I went over it, I didn’t care. Well, this year I care.)
(I’m not complaining - we’re still employed and everything. It’s just that the side business didn’t perform as well as we had hoped, and frankly, as well as it had in the past. It happens.)
I need help on that last one, though. I have an android phone, which I use for, um, making and receiving calls, and I am guessing there is probably an “app” that can help me so when I’m at the grocery store, I can look and see exactly how much is left in the budget. Googling these seems to yield old results or apps that no longer exist, and so I ask you: do you have a budgeting app that you use and love? Or is it called “cash?” Help me come into the “app world” and show me that phones can be used for more than calls and checking facebook. Or tell me to bust out envelopes and cash - screw technology!
(P.S. I don’t use mint. It scares me.)
Help a girl out? And what do you resolve?
