The last time I crossed an ocean, I went to London. I was tired. I remember pushing myself to do fun things, the whole time wishing I was just back in bed. But I kept thinking, “I can’t sleep. I’m in London. I might never be here again. There’s too much too see to just sleep!”
So I wish I could tell you that now that we’ve arrived in Jerusalem, we’ve done some really wonderful and exciting things. But the truth is, we’re just really tired. And cold. Seriously. Nobody told me that it would be on the chilly side here—all I heard was how hot it was, so I didn’t pack a single long sleeved item of clothing for my son, and only one long sleeved shirt for myself and one for Little Sister. We walked outside at 7am (after having been awake since 3am–yes, all four of us), only to turn around and go back inside because my small children were shivering. Hopefully we can find a place to buy a sweatshirt or something. Soon.
That’s not to say we haven’t seen cool things. There was a prayer circle on the plane as we were coming over, complete with prayer shawls and phylacteries. There were men at checkpoints with machine guns as we drove out of the airport, in case we needed reminding that we’re not in America anymore. And despite being a little cold for shorts, the sky is a blue so bright it sort of hurts my eyes to look at it, and I wonder at all the people walking by who aren’t wearing sunglasses.
So today our goal is to head down to the old city, maybe take a peek at the BYU Jerusalem center. I’m sure we’ll see some cool things there too.
We’ll head out as soon as DH is done with his nap.
