I deleted my last post about my musings on Judiasm when I was told it was borderline offensive. That was not my intent, and I apologize.
We had a mid-morning snack in a field that could have been the spot where the angel appeared to the shepherds. I mean, it’s obviously impossible to know the exact spot, but it was easy to imagine the shepherds looking over the hills to Bethlehem, seeing the star, and heading towards it. But the group I was with were laughing about the song, “Far far away on Judea’s plains”. Picturesque and interesting, yes. Plains, no.
It was rocky, treacherous, and hilly, with very little vegetation. In the same way I feel for Mary, I feel for any goat or sheep who has to find food on that hill.
But I find it easier to reflect on the spiritual happenings of this area when we are outside. I don’t know if that’s because as Mormons, we aren’t that attached to our places of worship–I mean, when people come to town, do you say, “Oh you’ve GOT to see the pulpit at our stake center!”? Our temples are beautiful, but the ceremonies inside don’t necessarily relate to the building itself. We don’t, for example, build our churches in the shape of crosses. When it comes down to it, we can hold our worship services anywhere, says the woman who has gone to church and taken the Sacrament in the cafeteria of an elementary school.
So maybe my own religious tradition make me unattached to buildings.
Or maybe I’m just a nature girl.
Where do YOU feel most comfortable spiritually?
(Oh, and for those of you who were wondering, we’re doing fine on the food front. No, without an oven, we can’t make some of our favorite standbys, but with a little creativity and some borrowed dishes we’ve been able to manage. Mostly, we eat a lot of pita, bread, humus, pasta and rice, with lots of fruits and veggies. Seriously, the produce here is unbelievable. I’m going to miss it muchly.)
