I have a house full of children right now. 2 friends for J, a new friend for Little Sister. It’s noisy. I even had to feed them all lunch, and put out a spread of mac ‘n cheese, celery sticks with peanutbutter, green peppers (picked from the garden! Yay for gardens!), peaches, and lemonade. Healthy and easy, but only about half of the kids ate the food. The others complained that they weren’t hungry, that they didn’t like any of those things, but there are half eaten peaches strewn about my house. Little Sister is trying on a variety of dress ups, leaving a slew of glitter and tulle in her wake.
My children woke up this morning fighting. They are 5 years apart, and they still fight. They have been fighting all summer. They did great in Israel, honestly, awesome. But since we’ve been back, they just can’t stand each other. On Saturday night, I heard a ruckus between the two of them, and J slammed his bedroom door. I was in my room, and I heard Little Sister, who was left alone on the landing in front of J’s room, say to herself. “I don’t know why J is so mean. He always treats me not nice.”
It just about broke my heart.
But on the other hand, Little Sister is always in his face. She’s been known, in her younger days, to wander into his room and gleefully rip apart his toys. She’s a tag along who can’t fight with J, and if they do fight, J can’t fight fair. Little Sister is too little for him to really wail on. So they bicker. And argue. And drive each and other (and me!) crazy.
So today, I’ve filled the house with kids. There is a nice buffer. Everybody is playing, and everybody is happy. Sigh of relaxed mother sitting back with a lemonade.
I never want these extra children to leave my home. Ever. I want them to stay forever so my children can learn to not hate each other and have a happy childhood ignoring their sibling. And if YOU have a few extra kids you want to get rid of, send them my way. I have some extra peaches for snack and an extra nerf gun, just waiting for ‘em. And don’t you fret, that nerf gun is fully loaded.
