When Rolling Over Just Isn’t Enough24 Jul 2006 04:42 pm

Have you ever been just drifting off to sleep in your new, cost-too-much-but-it-was-worth-it king size mattress that feels like you are sleeping on a cloud, only to be rudely interrupted in your journey to sleepland?
Of course you have! You have children! But what if I asked you if it was your husband that did the interrupting, and not your children? And the interrupting was not for any kind of fun reason whatsoever, but because he SNORES?
If so, WHAT DID YOU DO ABOUT IT?

I elbow him in the ribs
Comment #1 by TftCarrieJuly 24th, 2006 at 7:08 pmI nudge him. Then I shove him. If he doesn’t quit, I shove him hard enough to wake him up a little bit, and he apologizes and goes back to sleep. That usually works if the nudging doesn’t.
Comment #2 by dangermomJuly 24th, 2006 at 8:14 pmI heard once that a loud clap is the best option - enough to wake them almost completely, but so short that they can’t remember what woke them.
Or you could try some of the preventative options…
Comment #3 by AnonymousJuly 24th, 2006 at 9:26 pmI yell his name and shout, “YOU’RE SNORING!” That usually wakes him up enough to apologize and roll over to the other side.
Ok, sometimes he gets really awake and pissed that he can’t get back to sleep because I woke him up, but that works to your advantage too, because then you can just go to sleep before him and be blissfully unaware of any snoring he makes because you are already asleep.
Sorry, that was like, the longest sentence ever. Time for bed.
Comment #4 by Heather O.July 24th, 2006 at 10:09 pmEarplugs, baby. Earplugs.
Comment #5 by jbnJuly 24th, 2006 at 10:18 pmMy husband doesn’t snore. Oh no, it’s worse. When he rises at *4am*, he shakes me awake — just to see if, finally, by some miracle, I have the “will power” to be an “early riser” and enjoy the “best part of the day.” He’s so-o-o-o on the morning shift when we have kids.
Ear-plugs block out kids and husband — sounds like a winner.
Comment #6 by DeborahJuly 24th, 2006 at 11:19 pmI do the elbow in the ribs too. Or just put a pillow over his face. He likes to sleep like that anyway, so I figure we both win!
Comment #7 by Jamie JJuly 25th, 2006 at 1:13 amDeborah- my DH is one of those insane people who think 4 am is a good time to get up and greet the day- ugh!! AND HE SNORES. And, I’m a total night owl, always have been. BUT- that does work out well with babies- DH has always taken the morning shift, so I always know I will be able to sleep from 4-7, no matter what.
As far as snoring, my DH shakes the house, and I haven’t found anything but rolling him over to help. Good luck!
Comment #8 by Tracy MJuly 25th, 2006 at 3:49 amThere is this beautiful little machine called the c-pap (i think). I actually refer to it as the apparatus. My dad who is the worst snorer in the universe wears it at night, and now when we visit we can actually sleep. It is a gem of the night!
Comment #9 by AbbyJuly 25th, 2006 at 12:38 pmUm, my husband doesn’t snore, but keeps me awake with his sleep-talking. Usually he’s really cute and he tells me that I’m sexy and he loves me (I know I’m lucky), but other times he does really strange things. I have a pillow that is perfect and I have a hard time sleeping without it. I cuddle it in my arms and rest my head on the upper end. The other night as I was about to fall asleep, my husband (who was asleep already) yanked it out of my arms and put it under his head! I sat up and demanded my pillow back, which he then denied he had, until I pointed out he was laying on it. He then gave it back. If this was a more common occurence, I think I’d want to stop it, but I think it’s so funny that I just can’t help but laugh!
Comment #10 by LindseyJuly 25th, 2006 at 1:42 pmit’s sad, because after 30 or so years of it you won’t be able to sleep unless there is someone quite large and noisy sleeping next to you…sigh
Comment #11 by s'meeJuly 25th, 2006 at 2:18 pmI support the ear plug solution as well. The other great side effect of wearing them is that my hubby hears the crying babies and I sleep blissfully through the midnight poop explosion, erupting barf, or bad dream. And I can honestly claim ignorance and am not fake sleeping just “to see” if he’ll get up. The only problem with them (and there is a special kind that I use) is that my husband likes to wake me up whilst night-fighting communists (I’m dating us here), spiders, or terrorists with vivid karate moves and stealth secret leaps.
Comment #12 by MaraliseJuly 25th, 2006 at 4:11 pmI kick him until he wakes up, then pointedly remind him to put on the mask and turn on the CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine to treat his sleep apnea. The machine makes a nice white noise, too. Am very lucky.
Comment #13 by ubercylJuly 25th, 2006 at 5:36 pmEarplugs AND Ambien! Just don’t plan on hearing anything else either!
Comment #14 by wbprawJuly 25th, 2006 at 8:47 pmThe CPAP machine is your cure! DH sleeps better and so do I. I thought the noise would bother me but it actually lulls me to sleep. Yeah, no more kicking, shaking or nudging!
Comment #15 by MelJuly 26th, 2006 at 12:08 amI shall have to look into this C-pap thingy. When the kids aren’t having a nightmare or hunger pains or SOMETHING, the hubby is sawing away while my sanity floats out the door. I am NO GOOD on little sleep.
I’ve taken to using ear plugs. I used to elbow him or kick him, but he would get really upset because “I can’t help it!” and then he would get no sleep while I did. He’s grumpy on no sleep too. Get this, he was OFFENDED when I first started using the earplugs.
Comment #16 by BeckAugust 1st, 2006 at 1:33 pmIt’s bizarre, but all I have to do is quietly say his first name (during the quiet pause)and he’llalmost immediately respond in a totally normal, awake voice, “Yes?” and I’ll say, “You’re snoring” and he’ll say “Sorry” and roll over. Strange.
Things to try:
Breathe Right Nasal Strips
Loose 20+ pounds (him, not you)
Now, I’m going to look into the CPAP for my snoring, thrashing, sleep-talking 7 yo!
