My darling son, you started your first day of a new school today. We had already met your teacher, we had toured the school, we had even bought new school clothes that you put on excitedly this morning without being asked. You woke up this morning, ready to go, excited for the adventure. You climbed into the car, shouting at me, “I’m ready, come ON, Mom!”. I pulled out of the driveway, wondering how much you would cling to me, how hard the transition would be, would you make new friends, would you…um…J, do you have your shoes on? What? We’re halfway there, and you don’t have any shoes on? What’s up with that? You took them off before we left? Why would you do that? You told me you were ready. No, I didn’t check to see if you had shoes on because I knew I had put them on you this morning already. Crap, now we have to turn around and go back home to get your shoes. NO, you can NOT go to preschool barefoot! Because I said so, that’s why!
We made it to preschool 10 minutes late, and you unbuckled your seat belt and crawled out the front seat, the one that isn’t child locked, you were so excited. I watched you run onto the playground, and tell your teacher all about your new Diego movie. I watched you navigate through the other kids, and my heart caught in my throat. Will you make friends? Will things be ok? After all, you are my only son, and this is all new. I turned to give you a hug goodbye. Um, where are you? Hello? J? Son? Light of my life and my eternal glory? HeLLO, I’m TALKIN’ to you! I’m saying goodbye. Goodbye. GoodBYE! YO, KID IN THE RED SHIRT! YOUR MOTHER IS LEAVING YOU RIGHT NOW! YA GOTTA ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT? HUH?
Yeah, your cursory glance and your simple, “oh, bye mom” was really touching, you little booger head.
