I know, I talk about Gilmore Girls a lot, and, BTW, I’m so excited for the new season to begin, but there was a line in the rerun I was watching the other day that made me laugh out loud. Lorelai said ”Children should shoot us for the things we make them do.”
It brought to mind the time I was sound asleep and my mom burst into my room. “Hey! Aunt Catherine’s here! Do that song you know!”
I shoot up, thinking the house is on fire. “Whasgonon…. Um, hi, Aunt Catherine.”
“We have to leave in a minute! Go on, sing it to her!”
“What song? What are you talking about?”
“You know! The one about getting married..the one you just memorized….go on! Hurry, Just do it quick!
(At this point it dawns on me what she wants from me and I am REALLY trying hard not to have an argument with my mother in front of my aunt.)
“Mom! I’m tired! I’m sleeping! That song is fast and complicated, and I haven’t even peed yet this morning!
“Come on! I told Catherine how you memorized this song and now you have to sing it for her! Hurry up!”
“(Realizing there is no way out of this)…um….Ok…(and I start to sing) ‘Pardon me is evrybody here, because if everybody’s here….’etc etc
My Aunt Catherine: How great! That’s amazing!
Mom: Thank you! You can go back to sleep now!
The door shuts, and I fall back on my bed, wondering why parents feel the compulsive need to make their children perform for other people.
Of course, now, I realize that need completely, as I tell my kids ‘Go on, show them how you can read’, or ’show them that new dance step’, or ‘PLEASE play your piano piece for Grandma?’ I constantly made Toddler Man do sign language for people before he could talk because I thought it made him look super smart, and reflected well on me as a parent.
Yes, children should definitely shoot us for the things we make them do, and yet, I like to think that it’s somehow all part of the great circle of life.
