Tonight, around dinner time, our doorbell rang. Hmm, that’s weird, I thought. Who’s calling at this hour? Surely, if it was the HOA, telling us that we violate section 42a subsection B of our homeowner’s agreement that specifically states that all pumpkins displayed on our porch must be no bigger than 15 inches in diameter without an appeal submitted in triplicate, they would have caught us before now.
I opened the door, and there stood a pumpkin filled with goodies and a cute note, telling me that I’ve been spooked! The note also included a picture of a white ghost and instructions to spook 2 other neighbors, and to put the little ghost in our window so we don’t get spooked twice.
My inlaws have been visiting, and they were as delighted as I was with the neighborhood offering. And it was clear which neighbor it came from, as it included doggie treats for Maggie. Maggie has only met 2 of our neighbors, one of whom has a Golden Retriever and set up a “doggie play date” immediately. The other waved nervously from a distance, and said she’d come and meet the dog when the dog calmed down a little bit. Yeah, tough call who thought of the canine’s needs.
Suddenly, a new Halloween tradition has been born in our family. J is already planning on who we can spook, when we can do it, and even what treats we can put in our little phantom treat bag. Suddenly, Halloween has new meaning. Even The Wiz could get behind this one. So, go get a little plastic pumpkin, some treats, and make up a dopey poem about the white phantom and getting spooked, include a picture of a ghost for them to put in their window, and go spook someone. It will make you feel like Christmas came early.

I was introduced to this tradition when we were still pretty newly-married and always thought it was a great idea, it really brings neighbors together.
Comment #1 by AlisonOctober 17th, 2006 at 8:51 pmWe call it “booed” in our neighborhood. My kids look forward to it every year.
Comment #2 by DedeOctober 17th, 2006 at 10:15 pmRight now the dollar bins at Target have some pretty cool Halloween goodies!
Comment #3 by JSOctober 17th, 2006 at 11:28 pmI am such a killjoy. I hate getting “Spooked” (we also call it “Booed”) because then I have to go out and do it too.
Knock on wood, no one in the neighborhood has come by this year, but I’ve been “Booed” the past two years. I have enough to worry about, without having to go play the Halloween fairy and distribute treats.
This sounds much grumpier than I intended. ;-D I really am glad some people enjoy it and I’ll grumpily follow through with my treat duties, if treats come our way.
Comment #4 by anonduetogrumpinessOctober 18th, 2006 at 12:18 amI kind of agree with you, grumpy! It is a cute and fun thing, and the kids love it. But it always happens on a hugely busy day, and I have to figure out some way to get to a store and fix up these cute things which I’m no good at…argh!
Comment #5 by dangermomOctober 18th, 2006 at 12:22 amI’m surprised so many people have had this happen before. This is a first for us. I guess I’m just behind!
Comment #6 by Heather OOctober 18th, 2006 at 8:29 amOh, yeah. Happens every year. Depends on the day and how busy I am as to whether or not I’m thrilled. My kids always love it, though.
Comment #7 by The WizOctober 18th, 2006 at 9:59 amI am another one of those one who hates getting “booed” as they call it in our neighborhood. And frankly, we got booed twice this year, because I didn’t have a chance to put out the ghost showing we had already been hit. I am due in a week with baby #4, and I decided I was not going to pass it on. I know… You all are looking for the Halloween version of Scrooge. I don’t care. I am getting smart this year and putting the ghost in with my halloween decorations so I can hang it up on the first day of October and pretend we have already been booed!
Comment #8 by GingerOctober 18th, 2006 at 11:54 amHah!
I must inhabit the boon-docks, because I’ve never ever HEARD of this… Sounds cute, though, I bet since most of the people in our older neighborhood are retired, (and grumby and not friendly) no one would play along.
Boy, don’t I sound like the killjoy today!? That’s what you get for buying an old house in an older neighborhood.
Someone “Boo” us, please!!
Comment #9 by Tracy MOctober 18th, 2006 at 12:15 pmTracy M, go “boo” the neighbor you consider the oldest and grumpiest and least friendly and see what happens. Many times older neighbors are afraid to reach out to young ones because they assume they will be rejected, considered busy bodies, or needy hangers on (is that even a word). A sister who became a dear friend to me I once thought of as old and grumpy. Give them a chance. And if you’re right about them, you’ll know.
Happy Halloween
Comment #10 by alaskagrandmaOctober 18th, 2006 at 1:38 pmThis is a fun idea. Maybe I’ll get it started in our apartment complex.
Comment #11 by Susan MOctober 18th, 2006 at 2:11 pmI’d love to start this in our neighborhood, but these days neighobrs aren’t close anymore and I really only know the people who live right next to me - and them only barely. So I’m not sure if others would be as enthused about this or not??
Comment #12 by EmilysOctober 18th, 2006 at 3:24 pmWhat do you all think? Would it be a good opportunity to spread a little neighborhood friendliness or would it stop at the first house I bring it too? Hmmm…
alaskagrandma- thanks for kindly putting me in my place… I will try and Boo Grumpy Grumperson down the block- and stop my complaining!
Comment #13 by Tracy MOctober 18th, 2006 at 4:08 pmEmily and Tracy-
I would give it a try. If it stops, it stops. Nothing lost.
I have not lived in the boondocks, and even lived in a very kid friendly, close knit neighborhood before we moved here, and this is really the first time I heard of it. I think it is big here, though, because I went and spooked somebody else in a different part of the complex, and there were several houses that had a different kind of ghost in the window, but clearly the same concept. This family I spooked is new to the neighborhood, and I know they don’t know very many people. I think they will be pleased that somebody thought of them.
Comment #14 by Heather OOctober 18th, 2006 at 5:48 pmI got “spooked” the night before last, and was a little annoyed myself. But today, not so much. I forgot to bring the “phantom letter” with me to work today so I could stop and make my copies to give away, so I jumped onto google, typed in “Halloween Phantom Poem” and found several different versions. I also have access to some fun clip art, so I just created a new “phantom” letter with a pic of a cute ghost on it. I decided to make 3 extra copies of it to give to the people I am going to “boo” so they don’t have to worry about getting copies. Anyways, if anyone is interested, let me know via email: MyLifeIsMyKarma@yahoo.com I would be happy to send you the PDF file so you can print it off yourself!
Comment #15 by auntie alOctober 18th, 2006 at 8:20 pmHappy Haunting!
I live in Wymount (married housing at BYU) and was spooked last night. It bugs me. It’s like a “pretending to be nice” chain letter. “Don’t get cursed by not doing this to two other people tomorrow night!”
Frankly, I work, go to school full-time, and am 8 months pregnant with plenty to do. I don’t want to feel guilty not having time or energy to bake something or time, energy, and money to buy treats and pass them on.
Last year we got spooked, too, and my husband and I re-gifted the treats to spook someone else so we wouldn’t feel too bad about it. This year, well, I have four-day-old cake I could give away.
Either way it’s lame. I hate Halloween. Stupid made-up pagan holiday.
Comment #16 by EmilyOctober 18th, 2006 at 10:26 pmI hate Halloween too, Emily. Maybe we should form a support group.
Comment #17 by The WizOctober 19th, 2006 at 12:32 pmI love Halloween! I just don’t like being booed, when I’m already busy trying to put together costumes and live my life and stuff.
Comment #18 by dangermomOctober 20th, 2006 at 1:04 amFooey. It has happened. I’m getting over a cold, and have lost my voice completely, and now I have to go find some goodies. On the bright side, whoever did it was quite the minimalist and didn’t include the poem, so at least I don’t have to go by the copy store too!
Comment #19 by dangermomOctober 23rd, 2006 at 12:29 pmHey! I finally got spooked tonight! We got a ding on the doorbell about 7:30, and lo-and-behond, there was the ubiquitous ghost and a loverly platter of cupcakes!
Hooray! I know this thread is way over, but I just had to chime in. Now I have the perfect reason to Spook Grumpy Grumperson down the street!
Comment #20 by Tracy MOctober 30th, 2006 at 1:34 amHooray! Maybe you don’t live in such a grumpy neighborhood after all!
