To our wonderful Mommies (and Dad’s!) out there, we would like to wish you a wonderful and gratitude-filled Thanksgiving.
Feel free to list things you are grateful for-whatever they may be… Happy Turkey-Day one and all.

Marveling at your new baby, still wet and fresh from heaven
The loud ticking of a wind-up Big Ben clock
Watching old black and white movies with your grandma
The dress Deborah Kerr wore in The King and I
Gone with the Wind
The architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright
An American Flag flying over our embassy when you are in a foreign land
The Monterey coast
The sound guinea pigs make
The smell of a new box of Crayola crayons
The silence of falling snow
My mother’s voice
My grandma’s hands
Heaven
Bubble baths full of my babies
Juice boxes
Packages in the mail from Grandma
Wedding rings
Spinning wheels with homemade yarn on them
The atonement of Jesus Christ

When i was a kid I learned sign language. I just picked it up really; had some deaf friends that helped me along the way & watched the interpreters in my classes instead of the chalkboard.

I marvel and am thankful everyday for Heavenly Father preparing me for life now with that experience as a child. He allowed me to retain EVERY single sign I ever learned.
Three years ago my baby (then 3 years old) contracted meningitis and lost his hearing completely. From the day he was born I started signing with him because “it would make communication easier”. The day he told me he couldn’t hear me - we started signing full time (until he was implanted with a cochlear implant - different story). I am SO thankful for that gift that I’ve been given. My brother and sisters all learned sign as well when we were young and none of them retained it like I did. I cry because I am so comforted by the knowledge that Heavenly Father DOES know us from the beginning to the end.
I am thankful for that.
Not to mention a son that does an amazing job reading lips, another one who is patient enough to try and communicate with his deaf older brother & a toddler daughter who signs because it’s the norm in our house.
I am blessed beyond what I’m worthy for and I’m so thankful for that.
Natalie, what a beautiful experience. Thanks for sharing.

Comment #5 by Heather O.November 24th, 2006 at 12:31 pmSo amazing. ASL was also something on my list! My grandson also has a hearing loss and we are also teaching everyone in the family to sign.
I don’t know if folks have come across the SIGNING TIME videos by Rachel de Azevedo Coleman and her sister, but they are the best thing we’ve ever used. There are lots of great songs (that stick in your head) and so they are wonderful for teaching hearing toddlers as well.
When the baby’s speech therapist lent us one, we decided to buy the entire set. Since we live thousands of miles away from Utah, it took us a while to notice the mountains in the background, the picture of Wasatch Elementary in the episode about school, and Rachel’s middle name and finally realize…oh, these are Utah Mormons that put this together.
