This Christmas, one of the letters I got ended with something like, “We often talk about how hard our lot in life is, but we just know it isn’t true.” I snorted when I read that. Hard life, my foot.
About 10 years ago, I worked for a family that had two sons injured in a car accident. The accident left both of them quadriplegics, paralyzed for life. (That’s a whole different series of blog posts in an of itself. A different day, perhaps.) I started dating somebody at the time who said something like, “Oh, the Sunday School lesson was so appropriate today. It was on Job. I so relate to Job. My life has just been so hard.”
Job, huh? Again, I had to snort. I was working with people who struggled to do the simplest daily tasks. Every day seemed like an epic battle, they had lost so much in the accident, and this person had the audacity to compare HIS life with Job? Needless to say, the relationship didn’t last long.
But the thing is, I’m just as guilty as the next person. I snort at people who tell me their life is hard because I want to say, “Oh, yeah? Try being ME!” Not only do I miss out on the opportunity to comfort those who stand in need of comfort, regardless of what the issue is, I also become a big fat whiner myself. Blech.
So, how do we stop the whining? I don’t think God is particularly pleased with whining, although surely He hears tons of it. Whiny prayers aren’t particuarly productive, either, although they do seem to be much easier to offer than other kinds of prayers. Funny how that works.
Also, it seems to be cyclical. The more you whine, the worse your life can seem. I’m reminded of the episode of Friends, when Ross gets the wrong order at a restaurant, and says something like, “First my wife leaves me, and then I get the wrong sandwich? Doesn’t ANYTHING in my life go right anymore?”
Any thoughts on how to break the sandwich cycle?
