J demonstrated his fantastic brand of 5 year old common sense the other day when he plowed eagerly into a prickly evergreen bush to retrieve some beads he had deliberately thrown in there. I watched from afar, wondering when he would realize his folly.
It didn’t take long. That’s good, because if it took him longer than 4 seconds to realize how dumb it is to go into such a bush, I would have seriously wondered about this kid’s brain power, and all my hopes for him of an academic scholarship into the highest academic institution in the land and MENSA membership and eventually the Noble Prize would have been dashed to pieces. Not to mention my own retirement plan of living off of the millions he will make someday.
Unfortunately, however, he didn’t realize his mistake until he was smack dab in the middle of the bush, and completely stuck. Daddy came to his rescue, and he whimpered a bit about being pulled out of the briar. Then his cousin, who is visiting, said, “Hey, his knee is bleeding!”
The whimpering immediately stopped, and J stood stock still, silent, staring at the tiny scrape on his knee that indeed was showing a bit of blood. “I’m bleeding?” he said. He touched it, and got a drop of blood on his finger. He stared at his finger, and then….
“I’M BLEEDING! I’M REALLY BLEEDING! I NEED A BAND-AID! WAAAAAAAAHHH” and I swear, every person in our neighborhood would have thought I was torturing the child.
I comforted him while Daddy got a bandaid, but the crying only escalated as the drop of blood turned into a mild trickle, and actually had to be wiped before the bandage could be applied. After the heroic rescue effort was finished, J threw himself on the porch crying, over and over, “I’m bleeding, I’m bleeding, I’m REALLY bleeding! Ow, ow, ow, ow OWIEEEEEEEEEE”.
Stoicism at its best.
It took a full half an hour to calm the child down, and, shockingly, he was asleep within the hour. His cousin seem rather concerned, and even my SIL asked, “Wow, can I help?” I showed her the massive wound, and told her I thought we would probably be okay.
I have no idea where the kid gets such drama.
